Standard concrete finishes and design ideas |
|
Concrete has traditionally never been thought of as a 'versatile' material...until now. Today, there are thousands of different uses, colors, textures, and effects you can produce from concrete. This section is full of the information you need to decide what look and style is best for you.

First, there is standard concrete. Outside applications usually have a 'broom' finish that provides traction and basic texture. This is where we begin.
|
BROOM FINISH CONCRETE DRIVEWAY WITH NORMAL CONTROL JOINTS
This is an example of plain 'broom finish' concrete. The lines you see are there to control where the concrete will eventually crack.
A good rule of thumb is to place a control joint, also known as an
expansion joint, about every twelve feet in each direction. |
 |
BROOM FINISH CONCRETE DRIVEWAY WITH PICTURE FRAME JOINTS
Notice the smooth edges and smooth lines through the concrete. This is called a
'picture frame'. This design detail usually entails little or no extra cost yet adds a more professional and polished look to any project. |
|
BROOM FINISH CONCRETE DRIVEWAY WITH BORDER STAMP JOINTS
Another design enhancement is adding concrete border stamping. This is the most simple form of concrete stamping and is done with a special roller. No color is usually added, so the stamp will dry to be the same or similar color to the surrounding broom finished concrete. Concrete border stamping is an economical way to give your concrete project some style that lasts with no maintenence. |
|
BROOM FINISH CONCRETE DRIVEWAY WITH LIGHT COBBLE BORDER STAMP JOINTS
Another example of border stamping control joints. This
pattern is 18" wide, and is called 'light cobble'.

CONCRETE INTREGAL COLOR
Concrete coloring is a simple way to allow your project to stand out. Pricing varies quite a bit depending on the shade of color. Generally, the darker the color, the more expensive it can be.

CONCRETE STAMPING
Concrete stamping is a beautiful design
enhancement to patios, driveways, walkways, and more. Stamped
concrete is also less expensive than real stone or slate.

Know where your utility lines are.
This includes but is not limited to power, gas, water, phone, cable, DSL, sprinkler, landscape, underground fence, etc...
Plan for the future by laying pipes under your concrete.
You never know when you will have to cross underneath your driveway, walkway, or patio. Any 4" PVC pipe will work just fine.
Be consistent with what you already have.
If you have curves in your yard, put curves in your driveway. If you have brick, consider a brick line or two. If you are going to stamp your concrete, use colors found on your house.
Choose your contractor wisely.
Find someone with liability insurance - it shows that
they're organized. Don't pay money up front - Any well run operation
shouldn't need it in most cases. Don't buy the concrete yourself - You buy
the truck whether or not he shows up.
