Flagstone walkwaysFlagstone is the most popular stone used in stone walkway construction in the south. Flagstone is a versatile stone that is common in the southeast United States. Much of the flagstone used in Georgia comes from Tennessee. There are several different thicknesses that can be installed depending on the base, subgrade, traffic, and weight that will need to be supported. The photo to the right shows a flagstone walkway that was laid on a 3" concrete base. It is important that any flagstone walkway slope away from any structure to allow for proper water drainage. Notice the tight joints in the stone pattern. The size of the joints between stones is one measure of the quality of your flagstone contractor. The smaller the mortar joints, the more effort that is required to set each piece of stone.

Flagstone Walkway ConstructionThere are several important considerations when installing flagstone walkways. When choosing your stone, shy away from stone less than 3/4" in thickness, as over time the flagstone may warp due to temperature changes and cease to adhere to the sub-surface. The thicker the flagstone, the less likely this will occur. You must also consider the base. All of our flagstone walkways are laid with a concrete base, with a bed of mortar to ensure good adhesion to the concrete. When constructed in this manner, flagstone walkways are very durable and can withstand temperature changes, sunlight, as well as foot and vehicle traffic without breaking down over time. |

Flagstone ContractorsWhen choosing a flagstone contractor for your walkway, patio, etc... it is important to remember a few things: Does he/she have good references? Is he/she in good standing (A+) with the Better Business Bureau? Do they use flagstone thicker than 3/4"? Do they install flagstone using a concrete base? Do they offer any guarantees? |
|
Stamped Concrete WalkwaysA less expensive alternative to a flagstone walkway is a stamped concrete walkway. Stamped concrete installs faster, uses less material, and has several colors schemes available, many that may match your existing home motif. |
