There are different types of stone veneer in Atlanta. The more popular and less expensive option is artificial stone veneer. The older, more expensive type of stone veneer is natural stone. Both types of stone are used today to achieve that elegant timeless look that only stone can achieve.

Artificial Stone Veneer
The retaining wall to the right was constructed using artificial stacked veneer stone. The concrete footing was installed first, rebar dowels were added to the footing, concrete block was installed to form the structure of the retaining wall, and then veneer stone was added to produce the look you see here. The cap of the retaining wall is usually done using more durable natural stone, because the stone cap must be able to withstand the elements of rain, sun, and natural wear. Artificial veneer stone is a good choice for the face of this retaining wall because it installs easy, installs fast, and comes in just about any color scheme you want. Artificial stone veneer is also durable and will last for decades with no problems, although it's lifespan is limited, unlike natural stone veneer which may last for lifetimes.

Natural Stone veneer
Natural Veneer Stone is the oldest type of stone masonry and it has been around for centuries and centuries. Natural stone veneer is traditionally a better look, although more expensive, mainly because natural stacked stone is heavier and must be installed with more care. The labor costs associated with natural veneer stone are higher as well. The photo to the left is a medium stack stone veneer. Natural veneer stone comes in several styles:
Natural thin stack veneer stone
Natural medium stack veneer stone
Natural thick stack veneer stone
Random veneer stone
Just to name a few.

Stone Fireplaces
The photo to the right is a natural thick stack stone veneer. The weight of this natural stone style must be accounted for in the foundation and framing of the interior space where the veneer stone is being installed. This stone fireplace likely weighs around 1500 lbs. Artificial stone veneer could have been installed here, and because artificial stone adheres directly to the surface of the wall, no additional framing would be required.

Outdoor Stone Fireplaces
Outdoor stone fireplaces are quickly becoming the main outdoor feature in any outdoor living space. The stone fireplace in the photo to the left consists of a concrete block structure, artificial stone veneer base, artificial stone veneer walls and chimney stack, and natural stone for the cap on the hearth, mantle, and caps of the chimney. The interior firebox is made with specialized firebrick, made to withstand high temperatures. To get a quote on this or any other concrete or masonry project, click here.
