Stone Patio Ideas
The stone patio to the left had a standard concrete patio. BOSS Construction LLC extended the concrete base to the size that you see, and laid local grey flagstone on top of the concrete. It is important that the base of any stone patio be laid first with concrete that is at least 3" thick. This concrete base is needed to prevent the stones on the patio from shifting over time.
Important: Do not allow any stone contractor to lay your stone patio with just a mortar base. Mortar is not strong enough to support the stone on the patio, and over time the stone patio will develop cracks and shift.

Stone Patios with retaining walls
Sometimes, along with your stone patio, a retaining or sitting wall is needed. The photo to the right is a stone patio that was inset into the slope of the hill, and a stone retaining wall was constructed to divert the flow of water from washing over the stone patio itself. The face of the stone wall was laid with artificial stacked stone, and the cap of the stone wall was lade with a thicker flagstone that was installed slightly wider than the wall itself.

Stamped Concrete Patios
An inexpensive alternative to a real stone patio is a stamped concrete patio. Stamped concrete patios have similar features, and are superior in many ways to traditional stone patios. Stamped concrete:
Uses less material,
Is less likely to crack (one solid piece of material),
Installs faster and cheaper than traditional masonry,
Comes in more colors and patterns than masonry.

Outdoor Stone Fireplaces
Outdoor stone fireplaces are quickly becoming the main outdoor feature in any outdoor living space. The stone fireplace in the photo to the left consists of a concrete block structure, artificial stone veneer base, artificial stone veneer walls and chimney stack, and natural stone for the cap on the hearth, mantle, and caps of the chimney.
