PATIO DESIGN IDEAS

Almost every home has a Patio.  Most homes begin with a very small 8' x 8' square at their back door.  That amount of patio space won't do much good when you entertain friends and family.  When it's time to expand, you have some decisions to make.  This page is designed to help you as you make your decision.

Patio Ideas

You must first choose the patio material you would like to use.  Any patio material must be able to withstand years of freeze/thaw cycles, foot traffic, direct sunlight, rain, and heavy loads without shifting.  Patios can be made of, in order of cost:

Standard concrete,
Stamped concrete,
Stone,
Pavers,
or Brick.

Most concrete patio jobs require that we remove the existing patio, and start a new concrete patio from scratch.  There are companies that offer concrete resurfacing over your existing patio, but be careful when you choose this option.  One of the best ways to achieve a durable and long lasting outdoor concrete patio space is to hire BOSS Construction LLC as your contractor.

The patio to the left is original stamped concrete.

Be wary of concrete resurfacing.
Concrete resurfacing is a process that installs a thin layer of cement or polymer material on top of your existing concrete.  There is a debate in the concrete industry over the durability of resurfacing on exterior surfaces.  If your concrete is cracked before the new surface is applied, then those cracks will eventually re-appear in the new surface (regardless of what some may say).  Why take a chance?  Removal and replacement of the concrete area is surely a better option and may be comparable to the costs of resurfacing.  The resurfacing process does indeed have a role in concrete decoration inside of structures where environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and traffic can be controlled.

If budget is a concern, and it usually is, you would start with the most economical material, and that is concrete.  Standard concrete patios, when done right, can look great and last a lifetime.  The patio design idea below and to the right is a standard concrete patio with integral coloring, and 45 degree scores every 24".  Slightly more expensive patio design ideas include stamped concrete patios, shown below.

Stone Patio Designs

Of course, if stone peaks your interest, you're in good company.  Stone has been the choice for outdoor patios for thousands of years, and offers a regal quality that cannot be matched by any other material.  Stone patio designs vary quite a bit, but for most people, they are looking for something similar to the photo on the left.  This random flagstone patio was installed in Peachtree City, Ga, using 1 1/2" thick flagstone over a concrete patio base.

Outdoor Patios

Pavers are also popular outdoor patio material.  Unfortunately, the time and expense required to properly install outdoor patios made of pavers can outweigh the benefits of the material.  Paver outdoor patios should have a sub-grade of 3" crushed, compacted stone and an inch of sand laid as a base.  Then the pavers are installed, jointed with sand or polymeric material, and compacted again using a vibratory tamp.  These outdoor patios, when done correctly, look great and last quite a while.
